The owners have lived in this courtyard house for more than 10 years. The garden surrounding the house, which does not have much design, has atmospheric weaknesses: The courtyard has an uncomfortably hot microclimate, so that the outdoor space is not inviting. The plantings around the house need suitable additions.
The courtyard with its southern exposure will be turned into a tropical hortus conclusus, or enclosed garden; dense plantings of perennials, shrubs and trees will create a tropical-looking picture with strong green tones and other intense colours. A narrow gravel pathway leads to a gravelled area, where a limestone seat shaped like a lentil invites you to relax; a fine spray of water rises from a water bowl and makes a quiet splashing sound. A pergola added by the architect over the wooden deck will be thickly planted and also provide pleasant shade to the bedrooms. The plants and the pergola create atmospheric density and a cooling microclimate.
