The garden was laid out in 1909 as an architecture garden. It has not been possible to verify who designed the garden. However, the garden architect may have been Ernst Klingenfuss, who designed numerous villa gardens for the architects Bischoff and Weideli. Compared with other villa gardens in the city of Zurich that were laid out by the architects, the Villa Gutland garden is one of the only ones that is still mostly authentic.
